Kevin Phillips concerned by big break in between West Brom fixtures
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is concerned by the lengthy break West Brom have had between fixtures ahead of playing Leicester at the King Power on Thursday night.
Sam Allardyce’s men are in good form after winning their last two matches against Chelsea and Southampton while scoring eight goals in the process.
However, their last outing against the Saints came 10 days ago.
Phillips is worried about momentum being lost in that time while he adds Big Sam would have had some decision-making of his own to do on what to do with the squad.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Phillips said: “It’s always difficult. What do you do? Do you give the players three or four days off just to switch off or rest? Or do you keep training?
“When you’re close to the end of the season you don’t want this break, you want to play and follow up the last two results with another and all of a sudden, you just don’t know what’s going to happen.
“It’s not ideal but unfortunately it is what it is and I’m sure Sam’s got enough experience to judge it and make the calls in terms of giving them rest or training.
“At this stage of the season you don’t need to train them hard, it’s just ticking over and keeping them focused.”
Leicester haven’t had a long break like West Brom have but Brendan Rodgers’ side did manage to boost their morale with an FA Cup semi-final win over Southampton on Sunday.
The Foxes will no doubt be in good spirits when they take on the Baggies on Thursday while Allardyce might also have one eye on Sunday in terms of his team selection when Albion take on Aston Villa.
Every match between now and the end of the season could be a defining one for Albion in more ways than one.
Relegation still seems inevitable but four or six points in the coming days will no dount change our minds.
In other West Brom news, this Albion player’s value rises £1million every time he plays.
