Jeff Stelling slams ‘Inexplicable’ West Brom performance in 3-0 loss v Leicester City

Soccer Saturday mainstays Jeff Stelling and Paul Merson have slammed West Brom over their shocking 3-0 defeat to Leicester City on Thursday.

Sam Allardyce’s side went into the clash in high spirits after successive victories over Chelsea and Southampton but the Foxes raced into a first-half three-goal advantage that Albion never recovered from at the King Power Stadium.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday [12:00, 24/04/21] a couple days after a potentially fatal blow to West Brom’s survival hopes, Stelling and Merson tore them to shreds during the live broadcast.

Stelling initiated the hammering, saying, “It was inexplicable though wasn’t it, how you can play like that after Chelsea.”

“I couldn’t believe it,” Merson replied.

“[Leicester] blew them away, absolutely blew them away. I couldn’t believe what I was watching.

“One thing I didn’t see coming was West Brom, if I’m going to be harsh, jacking it.

“First half I thought they jacked it, I really did and that really, really shocked me. I didn’t think I’d say that.

“I was shocked.”

Heroes to zeroes

We were the talking of the punditry world after some scintillating performances against Chelsea and Southampton that racked up an aggregate of 8-2 in our favour, but football moves fast and we were reminded of that in heavy fashion this week.

The plaudits have disappeared and the hounds are back out.

There’s no real defence that we can mount against them either after that awful display against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Big Sam’s charges should have looked refreshed after a ten-day rest but we looked anything but that on Thursday.

It really did look like we downed tools but we can’t imagine that truly was the reason, surely they can’t have given up that easily with so much at stake.

In the end maybe quality just shone through and we don’t have enough of that to compete with teams like Leicester when they’re at full throttle.
