Martin Keown hails West Brom star Matheus Pereira in 2-2 draw with Aston Villa

Martin Keown and Ian Darke were left lauding Matheus Pereira after some sensational deliveries during the 2-2 draw between West Brom and Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Brazilian didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing possession in the middle of midfield early on, but he grew into the game and started to make his mark after scoring the penalty to equal the game at 1-1 before a goal apiece in the second half.

He put in some sensational crosses that caused trouble for the Villa defence, and one in the first half left Keown and his co-commentator Ian Darke licking their lips during BT Sport’s live coverage.

“It’s a glorious ball isn’t it,” Keown said.

“It’s Pereira again, it just drifts in and [Okay] Yokuslu has time to see it come in.

“It’s a wonderful ball from Pereira, Sam [Allardyce] can’t believe it.”

Darke: “What a fantastic free-kick from Matheus Pereira.”

Keown added: “We talked about his delivery, it’s first-class.”

Pinpoint delivery

There were some really sumptuous deliveries into the box by Pereira and that ball for Yokuslu was one of the highlights.

He could be forgiven for his early indiscretions when he gave the ball away cheaply and allowed Villa to counter-attack on us.

Our Brazilian maestro was the architect of everything good we did at Villa Park, pulling the strings of all our attacks.

If and when we go down, it won’t be through a lack of effort on Pereira’s part, he’s just been let down by a lack of quality around him.

His display against Villa left us drooling once again and we’re desperate to see him stay at The Hawthorns beyond the summer and into next season.

Our chances will take a hit, however, if he continues to churn in performances like Sunday for the remainder of the current campaign.
