Kevin Phillips: West Brom star Matheus Pereira could be worth up to £35m

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips claims West Brom could get upwards of £35million for Matheus Pereira if the Brazilian leaves in the summer.

Pereira, 25, has steadily shown improvement over the course of the Premier League season, scoring 10 goals and supplying five assists in 31 appearances across all competitions for the Albion.

The attacker’s recent performances have led to speculation surrounding his future at The Hawthorns.

The Athletic has reported that Aston Villa are among a number of clubs monitoring him.

If Pereira was to move on in the summer, Phillips believes it would be for a large sum of money.

Speaking to West Brom News, the ex-Baggies striker said: “He hasn’t set the Premier League alight but he’s certainly got qualities.

“I think when you go on average price, you’re probably looking between £25million and £35million. £25million definitely but more than that, I just don’t know.

“Of course, if it was to happen, West Brom would certainly try and hold out for more and get the best possible deal they can, which they have every right to.”

At the end of March, Brazilian news outlet UOL reported that the Baggies would seek £17million for Pereira in the summer – a fee which is no doubt way lower than what the ex-Sporting CP ace is worth.

Pereira may not have performed consistently over the course of the Premier League season but he has shown that he’s getting settled in with a series of stronger performances as of late.

We’ve seen players leave the Championship for way over £20million despite never setting foot in the Premier League so when West Brom come to demanding a fee for Pereira in the summer, they are the case studies they should be looking at.

In other West Brom news, next month could be huge for Guochuan Lai’s ownership of the Baggies.
