Per Gloucestershire Live, Southampton are keen on signing West Brom youngster Josh Griffiths who has enjoyed his loan spell away from the Hawthorns this season.

The 6ft 6in keeper has spent the 2020/21 campaign out on loan at League Two side Cheltenham Town.

He's kept 21 clean sheets in 42 appearances thus far [Transfermarkt] and is already a favourite of manager Michael Duff who wanted to extend his loan for next season.

However, Southampton have now shown an interest in the 19-year-old, and he could opt against staying on at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium if a move to St. Mary's materialises.

The Saints are known for their impeccable youth development, and Griffiths would undoubtedly benefit from a move to the south coast.

His performances at Cheltenham also earned him a call-up to the England U21s for the 2021 UEFA European U21 Championships in March.

Since then he's been on Southampton's radar and they also sent scouts last Tuesday to watch him play against Carlisle United.

Should keep him

While Griffiths isn't first-team level yet, a couple of stellar loan seasons and he'll be ready to stand between the sticks for the senior team.

He's got the right temperament and application, and has earned the praise of his peers as well as the coaches at Cheltenham.

Duff's even referred to him as 'excellent' after a splendid display against the Gary Neville co-owned side Salford City. [Park Life Sport]

A move to Southampton would be tempting, but the club hierarchy must rally behind the player and make certain future assurances that could make him see West Brom as a better prospect.

There's no denying that he's going to be a success in the future, but he can offer a few seasons at the senior level before eventually taking the step up.

Another thing that could tempt him to stay is if Sam Johnstone leaves and the Baggies don't sign a replacement this summer.
