Kevin Phillips predicts West Brom clash v Arsenal

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips predicts West Brom will earn a shock win on Sunday when they take on Arsenal at the Emirates.

Albion will be relegated back to the Championship if they lose in North London this weekend or if other results go against them over the course of the weekend.

However, Super Kev predicts the Baggies will do their bit to stay afloat by beating Arsenal.

He claims that Arsenal’s Thursday night defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League could serve as a bit of a hammer blow to Mikel Arteta’s side.

“I could see West Brom getting a result because I think Arsenal have had a huge game in the Europa League, that was their sole priority,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“If there’s any hangover from that, I can see West Brom taking advantage.

“I’m going to surprise you, I’m going to go for a 2-1 win for West Brom.”

Arsenal thrashed Sam Allardyce’s side 4-0 at The Hawthorns earlier this season in what was easily one of Albion’s worst performances of the season.

The Baggies have had some success against the Gunners over recent years though, winning 3-1 against them in March 2017 and 2-1 in November 2015.

Both of those matches were at The Hawthorns and you’d have to go back to September 2010 for Albion’s last – and only – win at the Emirates.

That was arguably one of West Brom’s greatest away performances in the Premier League as Peter Odemwingie, Gonzalo Jara and Jerome Thomas put the Albion into a three-goal lead before a late Samir Nasri brace proved to be in vain.

It will take a similar kind of effort to get anything this weekend but it would be nice to delay the inevitable for one more week and at least avoid defeat in North London.

In other West Brom news, next month could be huge for Guochuan Lai’s ownership of the Baggies.
