David Meyler: Clubs will be looking at West Brom’s Dara O’Shea
David Meyler was full of praise for West Brom defender Dara O’Shea and he believes clubs will be keeping an eye on him.
The former Hull City star was commenting on O’Shea’s development, and added that he does not think the 22-year-old will be affected by Albion’s impending relegation.
He noted that Roy Keane experienced relegation with Nottingham Forest before going on to have a great career for club and country.
Meyler told The Irish Sun, “Look, the prime example is Roy Keane. He was relegated with Nottingham Forest.
“A lot of people forget that and he still won seven Premier League titles. I’m not saying Dara O’Shea is going to win seven Premier League titles but, at the same time, these things do happen.
“Dara had a phenomenal year last year, first time under Slaven Bilic he played a lot of games and he’s played a lot of games this year. He seems to be a mainstay.
“Don’t get me wrong, there will be a lot of clubs keeping an eye on players across all the team. He’s a vital part of that squad.”
Bright future
Other than his early substitution against Wolves on Monday, O’Shea has been a key part of the team under Sam Allardyce.
Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley were preferred for the early part of the season by Slaven Bilic but O’Shea has proved he has the quality to do well at Premier League level.
And with Kyle Bartley a reported target of Burnley and Newcastle [The Telegraph], O’Shea could be even more important for us next season.
Alongside Ajayi he could continue to be a mainstay in the side and if he replicates a return of 1.6 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per game [WhoScored] we will have a good chance of gaining promotion.
Hopefully O’Shea embraces the Championship and looks to take on the responsibility of being a key player.
After all, we expect there to be several changes to the playing squad this summer, and newcomers could need a player like O’Shea to lead by example next season.
