Chris Sutton shoots down radio caller after claim that West Brom are better than Villarreal
Chris Sutton was left stunned after an Arsenal fan backed Sam Allardyce to replace Mikel Arteta as manager and claimed West Brom are better than Villarreal.
The Gunners consigned Albion to Premier League relegation on Sunday night after a 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.
But despite that disappointment they are still a notch above Europa League finalists Villarreal, according to an Arsenal fan speaking on BBC606 [09/05/21].
“We just played a team in my opinion that are slightly better than Villarreal,” he said.
Sutton responded in incredulous fashion, “Based on what, what do you base that on John?
“Have you been in the pub tonight to say West Brom are better than Villarreal?”
Sutton was also left baffled by the mention of Allardyce on the Arsenal fan’s shortlist to replace Arteta.
He asked, “So you’d have Big Sam at Arsenal?
“You’d go with Big Sam?”
We wish…
Villarreal are sixth in La Liga after 35 games this season, with just two spots separating them from Spanish giants Barcelona.
In addition to their semi-final victory over Arsenal they’ve also beaten Dinamo Zagreb, the Croatian side who blitzed Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of their Europa League clash.
To suggest we’re better than them is ludicrous in the extreme and the shout was quite rightly shot down by Sutton.
As for mooting Big Sam for the Arsenal job…well, that’s slightly less farcical but still quite strange.
He’s shown he can work with and inspire talented attacking players like Matheus Pereira but the reality is that he has been relegated with Albion after failing to inspire a turnaround, at least not one that was quick enough.
The consensus among Baggies seems to be that Big Sam should be kept on as boss as we launch an assault on the Championship title next season.
We don’t think the club will have to battle Arsenal for his services, though.
