West Brom target Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer

West Brom are considering a summer move for Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer, according to Steve Madeley at The Athletic.

The report claims the Brazilian-born talent is on a list of potential targets as Albion look to rebuild their midfield which is set to be decimated at the end of the season.

Midfield trio Okay Yokuslu, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Conor Gallagher are all likely to return to their parent clubs after their successful loan spells at The Hawthorns.

Jake Livermore and Romaine Sawyers will be the only current senior options remaining and both have been in awful form, while the futures of Sam Field and Rakeem Harper, both out on loan, are far from certain.

A move for Hamer could solve some of Albion’s problems, with the 23-year-old labelled an “absolute genius” by his Coventry manager Mark Robins. [Coventry Telegraph]

Matter of urgency

There can be no denying that signing at least one midfielder is the absolute priority for Albion this summer.

Of course other areas of the pitch need to be addressed, such as strikers and wingers, but the impending loss of three key members of our first-team squad is a monumental issue.

Yokuslu, Gallagher and Maitland-Niles were essential in our mini-revival that began in February, with their energy and constant hassling of the opposition proving pivotal.

There is no chance of the latter two prospects being retained next season and Hamer would represent a smart move to replace their attacking impetus.

Seven goal contributions for a struggling Coventry side in his first season in England is impressive, and his all-action displays in the middle of midfield helped to inspire the Sky Blues to Championship safety.

He has the experience and skills to be a big player for us next season, and could be the driving force to take us back to the Premier League.
