Carragher raves about Robson-Kanu finish in West Brom v Liverpool
Jamie Carragher was blown away by Hal Robson-Kanu as the West Brom forward grabbed a shock goal in the first half against Liverpool on Sunday.
Robson-Kanu, 31, was handed his first Premier League start of the season by Sam Allardyce at The Hawthorns and that turned out to be an inspired decision within 15 minutes when the Welshman put the Baggies ahead.
Matheus Pereira played a great pass through the Liverpool defence, allowing Robson-Kanu to slot the ball past Alisson Becker with a neat left-footed finish.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event in the instant aftermath after the goal, Carragher waxed lyrical about Robson-Kanu’s finish and said it was that of a Manchester United player.
Liverpool legend Carragher said: “I said [Robson-Kanu] would provide a different challenge from what you saw on Thursday – he just finished like he was one of those players on Thursday in a Manchester United shirt. The quality in that finish…
“Rhys Williams gets dragged towards the ball and Nat Phillips is stuck, there’s not much he can do. But that is a superb finish.
“You know what he wants to do, he wants to bend it in with that left foot and you see Rhys Williams step out. T
“he space is there for an absolutely expert finish from that left foot. He just bends it and finds a way past the Liverpool goalkeeper.”
Where did that come from?
Robson-Kanu’s inclusion in the starting line-up raised alarm bells among West Brom fans ahead of kick-off with the goal-shy Welshman replacing Mbaye Diagne.
However, there’s no denying that he deserves plaudits for that finish because he showed all the composure as one of the Premier League’s top centre-forwards.
He didn’t panic, he knew exactly what he was going to do and he did it – expertly.
Robson-Kanu does have a knack for scoring sublime finishes but the issue with him is that he very rarely gets into the positions to do that.
His link-up play has proven invaluable at times, especially with Pereira, who starred in the attack with the Welshman in the Championship last term.
As it stands, HRK’s contract is up next month as he’ll be released by the Baggies.
Could that goal mean a new deal is on the cards?
There are plenty of cases for and against that happening.
In other West Brom news, this 23-year-old could be released by Albion next month with a Championship move on the cards.
