Alan Smith raves about West Brom star Matheus Pereira in clash v West Ham

Alan Smith was dazzled by the display of Matheus Pereira during the fierce encounter between West Brom and West Ham on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian playmaker was a constant menace throughout the clash at The Hawthorns, deceiving defenders with his superb dribbling abilities.

He also scored the opening goal of the game after his corner sailed into the West Ham net via a slight touch from Tomas Soucek, though the visitors ran out 3-1 winners.

Sky Sports commentator Smith waxed lyrical about the 25-year-old during the broadcaster’s live coverage of the match.

‘What a ball. What a beauty of a cross this was,” he remarked in the first half.

“He really does deliver a beautiful ball Pereira, his set-pieces are not easy to defend at all, flat and whipping.”

The former Arsenal striker didn’t stop there, continuing his praise in the second half.

He said: “When he gets the ball fans get off their seats. He’s skilful, inventive and sharp.”

“Defenders are nervous when they’re facing this fella because he’s so tricky,” Smith added.

Pereira is a player unlike any other at Albion.

He exudes creativity and can cut through defences at ease, something that can’t be said for the rest of our squad.

Without him our position would have been even more perilous this season – we would surely be below rock-bottom Sheffield United.

The other attackers have rotated around him with the likes of Karlan Grant, Callum Robinson and Grady Diangana failing to hold down regular spots alongside him.

Pereira has been the one constant in our attack and he must be attracting considerable interest ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window.

He deserves to ply his trade in the Premier League but we’d love to keep hold of him for one more season at least.

Perhaps a deal can be struck whereby he is allowed to leave at the end of next season if we don’t make an immediate return to the top-tier.

If not, we must ensure we get top dollar for one of the Premier League’s hottest properties.
