Adrian Goldberg claims there would be uproar if West Brom appoint John Terry as manager
Adrian Goldberg believes John Terry will be on the radar of West Brom as they hunt for a new manager, but claims it would be a hugely unpopular decision.
Sam Allardyce announced after Albion’s 3-1 loss to West Ham on Wednesday that he would be stepping down from his role at the end of the season, leading to widespread speculation as to who his successor will be.
Adrian Goldberg discussed potential replacements on the new edition of ‘The Liquidator’ podcast [20/05/21] and he is certain one name would cause unrest if he pitched up at The Hawthorns.
“We’ve already been contacted by somebody who said they would not go and follow West Brom if John Terry was appointed,” he said.
“I think a lot of fans, given that incident, would struggle to go and pay their money at the gate if Terry was the manager.
“I think there would be a real backlash against the club if they appointed Terry.
“Football clubs are star-struck, they like players who they perceive to be glamorous and famous.
“I reckon Terry will be right on their radar.”
Contentious call
Appointing Terry would be controversial on a number of levels.
Firstly there is the serious incident in 2012 to which Goldberg referred to, where it was alleged that then-Chelsea captain Terry made racist remarks to QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.
He was found not guilty of racially abusing him under English criminal law but the Football Association found enough evidence to hand him a four-match ban and a hefty fine, while he also lost the England national team captaincy over the incident.
Terry did not appeal the verdict.
On a less serious note would be his Aston Villa connection (he is currently assistant manager to Dean Smith) and his lack of experience in coaching.
The former can probably be overcome but the latter marks him as one of the most risky appointments the club could make.
He is yet to manage a side, so should we really risk it all on him, particularly given how much he divides opinion?
It would be a ludicrous move by the Baggies board, and one that would go down like a lead balloon with supporters.
