Chris Lepkowski skeptical about Chris Wilder at West Brom
Reliable journalist and football pundit Chris Lepkowski is sceptical about Chris Wilder taking over the West Brom job from Sam Allardyce.
After Wednesday night’s defeat against West Ham, Big Sam made his intentions known that he would not be continuing at West Brom.
There was a feeling until Wednesday that Allardyce would be at The Hawthorns next season, but due to disagreements about the duration of the contract, he decided it was time to leave.
West Brom wanted him for the long run while he did not want to commit to that kind of a project.
One manager that would be willing and is the reported favourite is former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder. [Sky Sports]
Once Allardyce’s news was official Lepkowski took to Twitter to share his thoughts on Wilder taking over.
He wrote, “Wilder an interesting one. Belongs to the New Era stable – favoured by some at WBA. If it’s the Wilder pre 2020, yes please.
“But [he] also presided over a poor 18 months – spent big money on Burke, Rodwell and Ravel Morrison.
“Interesting that until yesterday some senior people at WBA were still of the view that Allardyce may stay. So what changed?”
Excitement building
While the last season of Wilder’s stint at the Blades wasn’t ideal, that doesn’t take away from all the hard work he did behind the scenes to get them up to the Premier League.
They played an attacking and easy on the eye brand of football in the Championship and stuck to those principles even when they got promoted.
He earned high praise from Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson who labelled him ‘fantastic’. [Liverpool official website]
It worked for the first season, but they got their recruitment wrong the next, and eventually, he paid the price for it.
He’s certainly a better option than the other names mentioned like Roy Hodgson, Frank Lampard and Roberto Di Matteo.
Hopefully, we can secure his services as soon as possible and accordingly plan our recruitment according to the players he wants at the club.
