David Wagner in mix to replace Sam Allardyce at West Brom

Former Huddersfield manager David Wagner is in the mix to replace the departing Sam Allardyce at West Brom this summer.

Wagner, who is admired by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, has joined the likes of Chris Wilder and Frank Lampard in the race to become the next West Brom manager, per The Daily Mirror.

The current Baggies boss announced that he would leave the club after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Europa League hopefuls West Ham United.

West Brom wanted him to stay for the longer term, but that wasn’t how he envisaged his next job to be – preferring a more short-term role.

One manager who could be willing for a long-term process, as he proved with Huddersfield Town, is Wagner.

However, his achievements since leaving Huddersfield haven’t been too impressive, which makes him a questionable bet for this job.

Don’t like it

We cannot possibly go from Wilder to Wagner. The former Sheffield United boss has proven his worth recently and has built a side that went on to take the Premier League by storm in their first season back up.

Recruitment didn’t work out the following year and that doesn’t mean it’s entirely the manager’s fault. He has a fixed playing style and a methodical approach that players and fans have bought into it.

Wagner may be a good man-manager and a pleasant interviewee but his managerial CV is not very impressive.

After losing all their momentum in the second season in the Premier League, he parted ways with the club by mutual consent and moved to Schalke.

There, in his first season, he set a new club record of 16 league games without a win – which included losing 8-0 to Bayern Munich.

Hopefully, something positive comes from the talks with Wilder and we complete his signing rather than settling for someone like Wagner.
