Sam Allardyce fumes at social media ‘Whispers’ after West Brom decision

Sam Allardyce has reacted angrily to rumours on social media that there were behind-the-scenes disagreements that led to his decision to quit West Brom.

The 66-year-old announced after Wednesday’s 3-1 home defeat to West Ham that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season which concludes at Leeds United on Sunday.

But he’s not happy with how the news has been received in some quarters.

“People are still trying to [say] that there is blame, that he’s not been given this or that – shut up the lot of you, because it’s a load of rubbish,” he said in his press conference on Friday, as reported by Sky Sports.

“It was done amicably, it was done in the right way. It is the best way I have ever left a football club in terms of our negotiations and what we both decided, and we amicably shook hands for what we’ve tried to do.

“There is no undercurrent or whispers, so all you people out there on social media, shut up, because it isn’t happening.

“I know they’d made me an offer and were disappointed I didn’t accept it, but we have to move on and West Brom have to get the best possible manager to get them back in the Premier League.”

Hot under the collar

It’s clearly an emotional time for Big Sam who has been vocal in his regret that he has not been able to inspire Albion to Premier League survival.

This relegation is a blemish on his near-perfect track record which had no top-tier relegations before he pitched up at The Hawthorns in December 2020.

His outburst over social media ‘whispers’ wasn’t his only one of the week as he fumed at West Ham striker Michail Antonio after Wednesday’s game, calling his post-match comments “disgusting”. [Sky Sports]

Big Sam is leaving Albion but he’s not going down quietly.

It shows there is still some fight left in him and that burning desire is what has perplexed many onlookers who believe he could spearhead a successful push for promotion next season.

But he’s made his decision and he’s sticking by it, and don’t be surprised to see him verbally swing for any other doubters before he departs.
