Kevin Phillips: Frank Lampard would choose Crystal Palace over West Brom
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips suggests Frank Lampard would snub a move to West Brom if he can get the job at Crystal Palace.
Earlier this week, Sam Allardyce announced he’ll be leaving The Hawthorns at the end of the season after the Baggies were relegated to the Championship.
Sky Sports reports Albion want to hold talks with Lampard, who left Chelsea in January.
However, the ex-Chelsea and Derby boss is also linked with replacing Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace [talkSPORT] and Phillips reckons he’d prefer a job at Selhurst Park than at The Hawthorns.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “I think he’d want to stay in the Premier League.
“Coming from Chelsea, he’ll probably want to stay there and Palace are in London too so he can commute – it’s just sensible from his point of view.
“I think the West Brom job suits someone like Chris Wilder as they’ll have a bit of a clearout and he can bring his own players in.”
Wilder does seem to be the favourite at the moment with The Telegraph reporting the Baggies have already made an approach for the out-of-work former Sheffield United boss.
Wilder is someone who has a lot of experience of winning promotion with teams whereas with Lampard, he came close in his debut season at Derby when they reached the play-off final in the Championship.
Lampard does boast the fact he’s spent some time at Chelsea and there’s no doubt that he’ll have links to Stamford Bridge, as well as his other former clubs Manchester City and West Ham.
West Brom could exploit that but Wilder does seem like the more down-to-earth and safer bet.
In other West Brom news, Albion would have to pay £700,000 to hire this manager who’s admired by the board.
