West Brom forward Robson-Kanu omitted from Wales training camp squad

West Brom forward Hal Robson-Kanu has been left out of Wales’ training camp squad ahead of the Euro 2020 tournament set to take place next month.

The 32-year old came out of international retirement last summer after initially hanging up his boots in 2018, with the player hoping to feature for the Dragons this summer.

Robson-Kanu was one of three players sent home by Wales in March after breaking curfew, with Tyler Roberts and Rabbi Matondo also breaching squad protocols.

Roberts and Matondo have made Robert Page’s squad however, with Robson-Kanu’s chances of making Wales’ final Euros squad now appearing unlikely.

Manchester United winger Daniel James has not yet been included due to his club’s involvement in the Europa League final, but he is expected to be named in the final squad, further knocking Robson-Kanu down the pecking order.

The Albion forward made 19 Premier League appearances this season despite suffering a significant arm injury, though he only managed to score twice in the league for the Baggies.

Unfortunate

It’s a shame that we might not get to see Robson-Kanu attempt to better his goal from the previous European Championships this summer.

Robson-Kanu stole headlines in 2016 when he scored in Wales’ 3-1 win over Belgium, taking three defenders out of the game with a slick Cruyff Turn in the box before firing past Thibaut Courtois.

If we’re being realistic though it isn’t a surprise to see Robson-Kanu committed when Wales are attempting to build towards the future. Senior players like Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale won’t be left out, but Robson-Kanu is expendable.

That isn’t to say Robson-Kanu would look out of place in the squad, with Kevin Phillips rightly describing the versatile attacker as a “handful” last summer.

Perhaps Robson-Kanu is one of many players who will suffer from our domestic struggles this season, because two goals for Albion, the second of which came just yesterday, certainly doesn’t inspire belief in his abilities.
