David De Gea congratulates Sam Johnstone as West Brom star wins England call-up
Manchester United star David De Gea has congratulated West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone after he earned a call-up to the provisional England squad for the European Championships this summer.
With Nick Pope ruled out of the tournament due to injury, Johnstone’s spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad looks set in stone after the Baggies number one was called up to the last England team too.
Johnstone, 28, tweeted that it’s an “amazing feeling” to be called up for Three Lions duty and that prompted his former Manchester United teammate De Gea, 30, to reply.
“Well deserved,” said the Old Trafford star via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday.

Johnstone was in stunning form this season.
On Tuesday, as well as earning a call-up to the provisional England squad, the former Man United goalkeeper also won West Brom’s fans’ player of the season and players’ player of the season at The Hawthorns.
It was thoroughly deserved as there’s no doubt the Baggies would have been relegated long before they actually were if it wasn’t for the 28-year-old’s heroics in between the sticks.
Unfortunately, the 3-1 defeat to Leeds on Sunday was probably the final time we’d seen Johnstone in a West Brom shirt as he’s been strongly linked with a move away from the Black Country this summer.
Johnstone will soon enter the final year of his contract and rather run the risk of letting him go for free next year, it seems the best course of action would be to cash in on him while his stock his high.
According to The Telegraph, Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United are all interested in signing Johnstone, who’s valued at around £20million by the Albion.
If we get £20million for him then there cannot be any complaints as he’s a player in the final year of his contract.
That money would do wonders for us in the Championship, especially if Guoachuan Lai isn’t going to pump any money into the club.
In other West Brom news, this manager is expected to get an interview with the Baggies.
