West Brom have not considered Rafa Benitez

Former Liverpool and Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is yet to be considered by clubs who are without a manager at the moment, including West Brom, according to Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards.

Writing on The Telegraph website, Edwards reports that Crystal Palace, Everton, Tottenham, Wolves and West Brom haven’t considered the 61-year-old, who’s out of a job right now after leaving Chinese club Dalian Professional in January.

AC Milan, Inter Milan and Roma have also changed managers lately but none of them considered Benitez either.

Edwards has therefore dubbed the Spaniard as “the best manager in the world nobody seems to want”.

At least try

Now that we think about it, why haven’t West Brom at least tried to sound out Benitez?

He’s managed in the Championship before and won the title with Newcastle back in 2016/17, a year after he suffered relegation with the Magpies.

He’s also likely to be desperate to get back into work with Edwards saying that the summer has so far been “humiliating” for the former Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea boss.

Yes, we know that it’s rather unrealistic to expect the Baggies to make a move for Benitez, especially when the board seems to lack the word ‘ambition’ from their vocabulary.

But look at what an inspirational managerial appointment did for Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa arrived at Elland Road in 2018 as someone with a huge reputation and while hiring him pushed the boat out in terms of finances at the Yorkshire club, it’s paid dividends now.

Leeds are a team that could genuinely establish themselves in the top half of the Premier League and all it really took was one inspired managerial appointment to do it.

Why not have a go with Benitez?

If he’s so eager to get back into management, Luke Dowling may find himself surprised.

In other West Brom news, a loan move has been mooted for this Aston Villa 23-year-old.
