Slaven Bilic blown away by West Brom star Sam Johnstone after England debut

Slaven Bilic was left blown away by West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone after he made his senior England debut against Romania on Sunday.

The Baggies stopper kept his clean-sheet, but also pulled off some brilliant saves, none more so than the diving effort to keep the lead intact in the second half.

Bilic admitted he wasn’t surprised having worked with the former Manchester United talent for almost two years at The Hawthorns.

Speaking to the Sun, Bilic was delighted to give his insight into one of our standout players over the past couple of years.

“Sam is a terrific guy,” he said. “He is so calm and such a hard worker.

“Sam is a great shot-stopper, great with his feet, great technique and so quick that he can dive one side and then save impossible things the other way.

“It doesn’t surprise me, he is great on and off the pitch.”

Johnstone has been incredible in the past season, and if it wasn’t for the likes of him and Matheus Pereira, we would have been relegated months before we actually were.

It is well-known that he has made the most saves of any goalkeeper in Europe’s top-five leagues, and despite the shocking defence ahead of him for much of the season, he stood tall.

That save for England left many people blown away, but not us, Johnstone has been doing that every single week for the past year or more with the Baggies.

Bilic backed his firmer stopper to succeed at the EUROs if selected, although we are quite confident that Gareth Southgate will go with Jordan Pickford.

It has been a brilliant season, no matter what happens this summer, although it is likely to end with a move away from the Albion, something we all have to get ready for.
