Alex Neil is still serious contender for West Brom job - The Athletic

Alex Neil remains a serious contender for the West Brom job after talks with David Wagner collapsed, according to The Athletic.

The former Preston boss is still out of work after leaving Deepdale midway through the season after numerous years of overperforming.

Neil was linked with the job back in 2019, but “annoyed” the Baggies board when flirting with the job to get an improved contract at Preston.

The Athletic’s Steve Madeley shared the major update in his latest piece this week, with the list appearing to get shorter by the day.

“Frank Lampard and Eddie Howe were keen to wait for opportunities in the Premier League, leaving Alex Neil and Wagner as Albion’s remaining serious contenders,” he wrote.

“With Neil having annoyed Albion in 2019 when he flirted with moving to The Hawthorns before signing an improved contract with Preston, Wagner emerged as Albion’s choice.”

Inspiring?

We wouldn’t say so, especially after some of the names linked.

After his flirting with the job before Slaven Bilic came in, we wouldn’t exactly think that Guochuan Lai would be keen.

The Chinese owner has been sticking his nose in the hunt from afar, calling off the appointment of Chris Wilder, something which left us all disgruntled.

There has to be some explanation behind all of these decisions, which is making our list shorter, and the names on there less exciting.

Getting out of the Championship at the first time of asking won’t be easy, we know that more than most.

Wilder was the perfect candidate, and the longer this fiasco continues, the less hopeful we are getting.
