Carlton Palmer wants West Brom to sign Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle
Ex-West Brom player Carlton Palmer has urged his former club to make a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.
The Baggies are eyeing instant promotion after getting relegated at the end of the 2020-21 Premier League season.
With major squad changes expected this summer, West Brom could be in need of a new striker as they prepare for life back in the Championship.
Gayle was a fans favourite during a loan spell at the Hawthorns in 2018-19, and Palmer believes bringing him back makes a lot of sense.
“He’s certainly got goals in him in that league, for sure, certainly got plenty of goals in him in that league,” the Grantham Town boss told This is Futbol
“If you’re going to get promoted, you’ve got to get 87, 88 points, so you’re going to need goals. Gayle will get goals in that league all day long.”
The perfect man for the job
While he has often struggled in the Premier League, Gayle is the perfect man to lead our line in the Championship.
The 30-year-old scored 23 goals in 39 league games while with us, while he also bagged 23 goals in 32 Championship games for the Magpies in 2016-17.
He has only recorded double-digits in the Football League in three separate seasons, with his first coming at Peterborough United when he scored 13 times in 29 Championship games in 2012-13.
The veteran striker knows where the back of the net is in the second division, and the new manager should be keeping an eye on him.
Gayle is out of favour at Newcastle and could fancy a return to West Brom where he is adored.
Mbaye Diagne is returning to Galatasaray after his loan spell, and we need to get someone capable of firing on all cylinders.
One player who has proven himself at this level comes to mind – Gayle.
