Kevin Phillips reacts as West Brom close in on Alex Mowatt transfer
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is excited by the prospect of West Brom signing midfielder Alex Mowatt on a free transfer.
After enjoying England beat Germany 2-0 at the European Championships on Tuesday night, Albion fans were also treated to an update by Telegraph journalist John Percy, which said that the close is closing in on a deal to sign Mowatt after his release from Barnsley.
It is understood that as long as there are no late hitches, the 26-year-old midfielder will undergo a medical with the Baggies later this week and join the Black Country club on a free transfer.
Mowatt captained Barnsley to the Championship play-offs last season while the now-West Brom manager Valerien Ismael was in charge.
He’s someone who’s made over 200 Championship appearances across spells at Barnsley and Leeds and ex-Albion forward Phillips claims that experience is vital.
Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “If you get him for nothing then it’s a good signing.

“He’s got experience, he’s been around a while, he knows the manager, he’s probably not going to cost an awful lot in wages – it might be a good addition.
“It is an area that West Brom want some cover in because it’s a long season.
“If you can nick one without paying a fee then it could turn out to be a good signing.”
After selling Rekeem Harper to Ipswich, the Baggies are left with Jake Livermore and Romaine Sawyers as their only central midfield options.
Sam Allardyce liked to use Conor Gallagher, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Okay Yokuslu as his central three last season but all of them have since seen their loan deals at The Hawthorns expire.
In other West Brom news, Albion want to sign this player who scored againstr them last season.
