Kevin Phillips reacts as West Brom confirm Alex Mowatt arrival
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has hailed West Brom for signing former Barnsley captain Alex Mowatt.
On Friday, the Albion confirmed Mowatt, 26, had arrived at The Hawthorns after being released by Barnsley at the end of his contract.
Phillips is delighted with the business due to Mowatt’s experience of playing in the Championship for both the Tykes and former club Leeds.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “He’s a good, steady, solid, consistent player who knows the league.
“It’s an area we spoke about, when you come out of the Premier League you want to strengthen the spine, especially in that midfield area.
“It’ll be a good signing.
“He’s not a huge name but I think he’ll do a solid job.”

After Rekeem Harper’s move to Ipswich, Jake Livermore and Romaine Sawyers were left as Albion’s only central midfield options going into the 2021/22 Championship season.
When asked if he thinks Mowatt will be a regular starter for Albion, Phillips added: “I would have thought so but it depends on how pre-season goes and how he fares in games.
“You’d like to think with his experience he’ll go straight in but until we see those pre-season line-ups, I wouldn’t be able to gauge it.”
Mowatt has made 216 Championship appearances in his career and was vital for new Baggies boss Valerien Ismael at Barnsley last season.
The left-footed central-midfielder played 46 times in the Championship for the Tykes, wearing the captain’s armband and scoring eight goals.
In other West Brom news, Albion want to sign this player who scored against them last season.
