West Brom in talks to sign Matt Clarke from Brighton

West Brom are in discussions with Brighton over a deal to sign 24-year-old central defender Matt Clarke, according to Joseph Masi.

The Express and Star reported made the claim on his personal Twitter profile on Monday evening [12/07/21].

Masi wrote: “I understand Albion are in talks to sign defender Matt Clarke from Brighton.”

Club favourite

Clarke has been contracted to Premier League outfit Brighton since the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign, but he has spent the last two seasons on loan at Derby County in the Championship.

Remarkably, last season was his first without a Player of the Year award since 2016/17, after picking up consecutive awards at Portsmouth in 2018 and 2019 followed by success at the Rams.

The most recent campaign was a difficult one for Clarke and his loan side as they narrowly escaped relegation to League One, but he looks to have enough credit in the bank for Albion to be interested in signing him.

It’s an area the West Midlands club are relatively strong in with Kyle Bartley, Semi Ajayi and Dara O’Shea all reliable options in the centre of defence, but it looks like Valerien Ismael wants another addition.

A strong and graceful defender, Clarke enjoys carrying the ball out from the back and his experience and age mark him as an enticing prospect.

If Brighton are willing to do business, which looks likely given their vast array of defensive options, this could be a deal that goes through relatively smooothly.

It would be a statement signing as Albion eye up the Championship top spots.
