Steve Madeley: West Brom could send Matheus Pereira on loan to free up funds

West Brom could allow Matheus Pereira to leave on loan this summer in order to raise funds for incoming transfers, according to Steve Madeley.

Writing on The Athletic website, the Albion correspondent has detailed a scenario where the Brazilian attacker is sent on a season-long loan to allow the club to bring in new recruits.

Madeley claims there is “little cash for strengthening their squad” this summer.

On the subject of Pereria, Madeley added: “Should they be unable to find a club willing to stump up the £20 million-plus fee they would desire, it is possible they could consider loaning him for a season for a fee, which could be reinvested in the squad.

“It would not be the preferred solution, but it would bring in funds and ensure Albion made use, at least financially, of a player who is highly talented but not suited to Ismael’s intense pressing style. If they loaned him out, they would also retain his registration beyond next season, allowing them the chance to reassess in a year.”

Glass half full, or glass half empty?

There’s a couple of ways to view this scenario.

Looking at the negative aspect, it’s disheartening to hear there is a paltry budget to bolster the squad as Albion go in search of an instant return to the Premier League.

It’s not like the squad needs major surgery – there are a lot of talented, proven Championship players already in the ranks – but there are some major flaws that needs to be addressed, and an injection of new energy is always welcomed to keep players on their toes.

Furthermore, giving a club arguably our best player seems like charity on our part.

However, it does mean that the 25-year-old would still be contracted to the club, and thus he could play for us next season.

If we do indeed gain promotion this season, that would give a big chance of him lining back up at The Hawthorns, though it’s fair to assume he wouldn’t be returning if we failed in that objective.

Maybe it’s delaying the inevitable anyway, but it does allow us to cling onto the hope that Pereira’s days in the West Midlands are not numbered just yet.
