Ex-West Brom player Kyle Edwards joins Ipswich Town, journalists react

Birmingham Live journalist Joe Chapman has hailed Ipswich Town’s signing of Kyle Edwards after his release from West Brom earlier this summer.

The 23-year-old attacker left The Hawthorns after the West Midlands club were relegated from the Premier League and he embarked on a series of trials at various clubs including Championship rivals Reading and Bournemouth.

However, he has settled on a third-tier side after Ipswich announced the signing of the Dudley-born forward on a three-year deal on Monday afternoon.

West Brom

A number of West Brom affiliated journalists reacted to the news, with The Athletic’s Steve Madeley calling it a “good move” and Chapman adopting a more surprised tone, saying that it’s “some signing at League One level” on his personal Twitter profile.

Time to shine

Edwards spent 17 years at West Brom after joining the youth set-up at the age of six, and it was Albion’s Championship promotion success during the 2019/20 season where he really came to the fore, making 26 appearances and scoring two goals in the second-tier.

However, he struggled with the step up in quality and played just five times in the Premier League last season, with a further three outings in cup competitions.

At the age of 23, it was the sensible decision for the two sides to part ways to allow Edwards to seek regular game time and properly begin his career in senior football.

He was linked with a move to Celtic at the start of the summer which would have allowed him to play European football, while potential moves to the Championship also failed to materialise.

As it is, he now finds himself in League One, but at a big club that is aiming for promotion.

Edwards will link up with fellow Albion academy graduates Louie Barry and Rekeem Harper at Portman Road, and it looks like a good move to kickstart his career.

The talent is there, now it is up to Edwards to prove himself in senior football.
