Stoke City make enquiry over West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers

Stoke City have made an approach to sign West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers, according to Express and Star journalist Joseph Masi.

The Championship outfit’s interest in the 29-year-old was first reported by StokeOnTrent journalist Pete Smith who, via his personal Twitter profile last Friday [06/08/21], detailed that Valerien Ismael had left thim out of West Brom’s squad for their Championship opener at Bournemouth.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Baggies Broadcast [09/08/21], Masi has delivered an update on a potential deal.

“What we understand is Stoke have expressed an interest in signing Sawyers, but I don’t think it’s particularly close,” Masi said.

“There’s that expression of interest and we’ll see where it goes from there but I certainly don’t think he’s going to be announced as a Stoke player in the next 24 hours or anything like that.”

Bound to leave?

It looks like Stoke have firmed up their initial interest, but it remains to be seen whether they will launch a formal bid and whether that will be a permanent or loan offer.

Albion would surely prefer the former, but it might be a case of accepting the latter if his wages can be taken off the books for a season.

After being left out of Ismael’s squad for the trip to Bournemouth on Friday, it appears certain that he is not in the Frenchman’s plans this season, certainly not at the present time.

Ismael’s high-intensity football does not look ideally suited to the Saint Kitts and Nevis international, and thus a Hawthorns exit could be the sensible option for both parties.

While events have not transpired the way Sawyers would have hoped since re-joining Albion in 2019, there still remains a fine player in there, and perhaps a change of scenery will reignite his career.
