West Brom have not had an offer turned down for Mateo Cassierra

West Brom have not had a bid rejected for Belenenses striker Mateo Cassierra, according to BirminghamLive journalist Joe Chapman.

Portuguese media outlet Mais Futebol reported that the Baggies had already entered talks with a view to sign the 24-year-old Colombian, whose contract expires next year.

They did not mention anything about a bid being made, but the Birmingham Live reporter was asked about it on Twitter.

He said, “No, Miki. Don’t believe that to be true.”

Worth looking into?

Despite scoring two goals and looking threatening on the front foot for our season opener against Bournemouth, we’re still in dire need of signing a number nine and there’s now been a reported advanced interest in the 24-year-old attacker.

Hailing from one of the not so prominent teams in the Portuguese league, there’s very little about the striker in the media, but he enjoyed a relatively good campaign in 2020/21.

He bagged 10 goals in 32 appearances and guided his team to a respectable 10th-place finish, ensuring they avoided facing the drop.

Transfermarkt values the striker at £1.8million, which puts him well into our price range.

At 24, he’s not too old either and could be a risk worth taking if the club are sure that he can deliver goals in the Championship and help take us back to the Premier League.

He’s also a tall specimen and standing at 6ft 1in, he would offer the side an aerial threat both from crosses as well as dead-ball situations.

In football, you take any goal you can get, and he’s the kind of player who could end the game with his name on the scoresheet despite having a quiet 85 minutes.

It remains to be seen whether or not we follow up our interest with an offer for the player.
