Valerien Ismael says West Brom will make signings if need be
Valerien Ismael admits West Brom will only make more new signings this summer if he feels the need to.
The Baggies have added just four new faces to the team, and fans and pundits have been clamouring for more.
There are roughly two weeks remaining before the transfer window shuts for the summer, and while Ismael is not ruling out welcoming new players, he is not making any guarantees it would happen.
“We have two weeks until the end of the transfer period – that is a long, long, time,” the West Brom boss said (via Birmingham Mail)
“For sure, from next week everything will go quickly and faster, but at the minute nothing has changed.
“We are aware of the market. We know exactly what we need, but we need to make sure that it is the right decision for us.
“If we get that feeling it is the right decision, based on the analysis of the last two games, then we will make it happen. At the minute I am calm because I know exactly what is happening behind the scenes. We are working on the list of players and we will see what we can do.”
Quality over quantity
West Brom need a squad that is capable of helping them to achieve an instant return to the Premier League, and from what we have seen after two games into the season, this team can deliver the goods.
We have snapped up Alex Mowatt, Adam Reach and Quevin Castro for nothing, while Matt Clarke joined on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.
With nothing spent on new additions so far, it is normal for fans to expect more signings.
People are expecting us to at least bring in a striker that guarantees lots of goals, but Ismael is likely to stick with the attacking quintet of Callum Robinson, Karlan Grant, Grady Diangana, Matt Phillips and Kenneth Zohore till at least January.
The Frenchman is laying emphasis on quality over quantity, and that is the best thing to do.
With England international goalkeeper Sam Johnstone expected to stay and with the midfield and defence sorted, West Brom look good to go.
Nothing can be ruled out yet, though, and it will be interesting to see how things go in the coming days.
