Kevin Phillips urges West Brom to sign Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips wants to see West Brom try and sign Harry Winks on loan from Tottenham if the midfielder becomes available.

Winks, 25, made his first appearance of the season on Thursday night as Spurs were stunned by Pacos de Ferreira and lost 1-0 in the Europa Conference League.

Speaking to Football Fan Cast earlier this month, former Spurs and West Brom defender Graham Roberts tipped Winks to leave the North London club in order to further his career after struggling for game-time last season.

And if the 10-times England international does move on from Tottenham, ex-Albion striker Phillips feels The Hawthorns would be a good home for the midfielder with Romaine Sawyers reportedly set to join Stoke on loan [John Percy].

Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “Just thinking out loud, if Tottenham were to let him go out on loan, West Brom should go for him.

“With Sawyers going we need some strength in that area and what a player he is, he would be brilliant under [Valerien] Ismael.

I’m not sure how realistic that is though

Jake Livermore and Alex Mowatt have both started the Championship season well but they were the only recognised central midfielders in Ismael’s squad when the Albion won 4-0 against Sheffield United on Wednesday.

Robert Snodgrass and Semi Ajayi can play in midfield roles but it’s unlikely that either of them will be able to perform anywhere near the level of Livermore and Mowatt.

Winks would be a ridiculously good signing for any Championship club but it’s very unlikely he’d be interested in dropping down a tier.

In other West Brom news, Albion could still swoop in to sign this Premier League goalscorer on loan this month.
