Romaine Sawyers hits back at West Brom fans after misunderstood tweet
Romaine Sawyers has hit back at West Brom fans for feeling as though his tweet about his debut for Stoke City was a dig at his parent club.
Sawyers, 29, joined Stoke on a season-long loan from the Albion earlier this week and made his debut for them on Saturday as he came off the bench for the closing stages of a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
After that win, Sawyers joked that he “even got to play as an 8” in the win but some Baggies fans took that as a swipe at Valerien Ismael.
Sawyers then responded to those tweets, reminding football fans that there are real people on the end of the insults and abuse they receive.
“Can’t believe some of you guys are taking my tweet as a dig,” said the midfielder via his personal Twitter account on Sunday morning.
“It was a bit of banter that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. I wasn’t throwing any digs at anyone.
“That being said, those that felt it was a dig, next time you @ one of your players think about how he/she may feel.”
Still the scapegoat
Some West Brom fans always have a player they like to turn into a scapegoat.
Chris Brunt, who’s now widely seen as a club legend, has arguably been the biggest scapegoat of the last decade or so at The Hawthorns with the ex-midfielder being forced to delete his Twitter account at one point.
Some fans go too far and there’s absolutely no excuse for it.
Sawyers, however, did seem to be having a dig at West Brom.
He got a few minutes in his preferred role for Stoke on Saturday and fair play to him – but that’s why he was moved out.
Ismael’s system simply doesn’t suit the midfielder, which is why he’s been moved on.
In the first half of our promotion-winning season under Slaven Bilic, Sawyers was superb and his form led to him getting into the Championship team of the season.
He deserved that, but he simply wasn’t good enough in the Premier League last season and doesn’t suit Ismael’s tactics.
West Brom have done a favour to the former Brentford playmaker by loaning him out and he should be grateful for that.
In other West Brom news, Albion could still swoop in to sign this Premier League goalscorer on loan this month.
