West Brom come under fire on social media after letter to Albion supporter goes viral

West Brom have come under heavy criticism on social media after a club letter to an Albion fan went viral on Sunday evening.

Twitter user ‘Robbo’ posted an image of a letter that told a supporter they were banned from The Hawthorns for “Persistent Standing” during the 4-0 win over Sheffield United last Wednesday.

Aston Villa podcaster Ty Bracey expressed his outrage via his verified Twitter profile on Monday morning. He wrote: “What an absolute shambles from West Brom – 18 Months this lad has gone without going to the football with his friends or family for him to be banned for standing up.”

Hollywood actor and Albion fan Matthew Marsden also vented his fury at the ban on Twitter.

“This is a horrible look for you after months of the fans not being in the stadium,” he wrote.

“I hope cooler heads prevail, and this ban is revoked.”

Where’s the warning?

Of course, we’re having to assume many things as there has been no response by the club, but on the face of it, this appears harsh in the extreme.

Why has the club gone to such drastic measures?

We’ve only played two home games it’s not as if this is a season-long running saga that has developed.

In fact, there’s no mention that this flared up in the previous home fixture against Luton Town.

If it’s just from one game, surely it’s a bit strong to invoke a stadium ban and threaten the involvement of the police?

Of course, the club has certain stadium rules they have to adhere to, and that cannot be dismissed.

The enjoyment of others is essential – if there are kids, for example, whose matchday experience is being ruined by someone standing in front of them and blocking their view, then that needs to be addressed.

A formal warning should suffice after the first event.

But if this is based on now game, it seems harsh to ban a fan from The Hawthorns.
