West Brom progressing in contract talks with Sam Johnstone

West Brom are progressing in their contract talks with Sam Johnstone, according to Valerien Ismael.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before the Baggies face Arsenal, Ismael revealed that West Brom have a “good feeling” about sealing a new deal for the 28-year-old [the Birmingham Mail].

The West Brom goalkeeper had been linked with a move to West Ham earlier in the window, but after the Hammers signed Alphonse Areola, it appears as if no one will be coming in for Johnstone.

This is what Ismael said about the contract talks: “Progress is a big word, but we keep talking.

“I don’t think we can get a result quickly, but at least all the parties are talking.

“We have a good feeling, but we need to be patient on that.”

Good signs.

It seems as if the Baggies and Johnstone are edging closer to an agreement, which would be a huge boost for West Brom.

The 28-year-old is an England international and was described as “magnificent” by Sam Allardyce last season [talkSPORT].

He missed the Baggies’ first league game of the season but has played in the last three and kept one clean sheet.

If he does sign this new contract, that would be one of West Brom’s star men tied down and fully committed to helping the Baggies bounce back up to the Premier League, which would be a huge boost.

Ismael sounds confident, so it could just be a waiting game now.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies are set to be without first-team duo due to COVID.
