West Brom in hunt to sign Jayson Molumby on loan from Brighton

West Brom are staging a late bid to sign Brighton central midfielder Jayson Molumby on loan, according to Alan Nixon.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Friday, the Sun journalist reported that Albion are “in for” the 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international, who has had to make do with Under-23s football at Brighton so far this season.

West Brom have already signed Matthew Clarke on loan from Brighton this summer and also completed a temporary deal for Norwich striker Jordan Hugill on Wednesday.

Extra depth

Molumby might not leap off the page as a player who Albion fans will be excited about.

However, he’s should offer some much-needed depth to Valerien Ismael’s midfield options before the transfer window slams shut on Tuesday at 11pm.

Alex Mowatt and Jake Livermore have started all of Albion’s Championship matches in the midfield but due to the intense style of play employed by Ismael, injuries, fatigue, yellow cards and suspensions are always on the cards.

Robert Snodgrass and Quevin Castro started there on Wednesday night in the defeat to Arsenal and Castro looked miles off of being able to start in the Championship.

Molumby has experience at this level. Last season, he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Preston in the Championship but started only seven games.

It’s clear we’re no longer trying to sign players for the immediate starting line-up and only ones to pad out the squad.

And that isn’t too bad, really.
