Chris Lepkowski reacts to West Brom fans suggestion over Dwight Gayle and Jack Wilshere
Chris Lepkowski is stunned by calls for West Brom to sign Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle and free agent Jack Wilshere.
The ex-Birmingham Mail journalist branded it a “bonkers” view in a tweet on his personal Twitter profile.
Lepkowski was responding to a tweet by Twitter user ‘Ben Green’ on Saturday after he wrote: “Jesus, West Brom fans clambering for Wilshere and Gayle again…neither would suit this system.”
Wrong profiles
Neither Gayle [30], nor Wilshere [29] appear to be anything like the sort of player that Valerien Ismael would want at West Brom.
Taking the former first, Ismael found success at Barnsley last season through physical frontmen Daryl Dike and Cauley Woodrow, with both playing key roles in the Frenchman’s high-pressing system.
Callum Robinson has been playing there so far this season, interchanging with the likes of Karlan Grant and Grady Diangana.
However, while Robinson may not be the biggest, he is a mobile and willing runner.
While Gayle was a popular figure during his loan spell at The Hawthorns during the 2018/19 campaign, scoring 23 Championship goals, he has struggled for form and fitness recently.
A move for him would surely be heavily weighted on sentimentality.

Wilshere, meanwhile, is a non-starter.
He’s still a talented player, no doubt, but the ex-England midfielder is just not suited to the central midfield role under Ismael.
That’s before any mention of injuries or money.
The recent loan capture of Jayson Molumby from Brighton means central midfield is probably covered now, but the wait is on to see if Albion can sign another striker before the end of deadline day on Tuesday.
