Kevin Phillips debates the merits of Jordan Hugill loan move

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips views the West Brom signing of Jordan Hugill as a short-term solution to aid their Championship promotion push.

The 29-year-old Norwich City striker was confirmed as an Albion player earlier this week as he joined on a season-long loan [BBC].

While Phillips doesn’t believe he will be sticking around for too long, the ex-Albion centre-forward can see the merits of bringing him in after failing to sign a striker to replace the likes of Charlie Austin, Mbaye Diagne and Hal Robson-Kanu.

“I think it’s seen as a short-term solution, to be honest, someone to come in to give competition to the players that are already there,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“We know that they’re very light in that area, it’s only really Karlan Grant that is an out-and-out striker that can play up there. Obviously [Callum] Robinson can play up there as well, but I’ve said all along that they need that striker that maybe can get them goals to help get them promotion.

“For me, it’s just a short-term thing to help get them promoted. You’d like to think the player, after not playing much football, coming in with that hunger and desire to really prove himself, and he’s coming to a side that’s second in the league so I think it’s a great move for him.”

Hugill hasn’t exactly been prolific throughout his career but he is certainly a Championship-proven player with impressive physical abilities that will suit this Albion side under Valerien Ismael.

He also has a recent promotion success on his CV after scoring three league goals last season to help Norwich to the Championship title.
