Kevin Phillips impressed by West Brom trio despite heavy Arsenal defeat
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has laid down the gauntlet to a trio of youngsters that made their West Brom debuts earlier this week against Arsenal.
Albion were thrashed 6-0 by the Gunners at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night after making 11 changes to the side that beat Blackburn Rovers on the weekend.
Robert Snodgrass, Kenneth Zohore and Alex Palmer provided some experience but it was an otherwise youthful Albion outfit that were tasked with handling the likes of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe and Bukayo Saka.

Despite the humbling at the hands of the Premier League side, Phillips saw some positive signs at B12.
“I think Quevin Castro has shown his potential,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“He’s shown potential in the middle of the pitch. There’s some good young players but I think he was the one who stood out a little bit in terms of the quality. He’s a big strong lad.

“[Saul] Shotton at the back as well, he’s a good young defender and [Caleb] Taylor as well so there are some good young players, but it’s now whether they can take that next step.
“I think it was a good learning curve for them, the big thing about the game is that if they are brought into the side at any point then they know what their role will be, they know their jobs.
“But I think Castro was the one who stood out for me amongst them.”
