West Brom privately attempted to get rid of Kenneth Zohore before deadline day
Agents were reporting that West Brom striker Kenneth Zohore was available for a transfer on deadline day, according to The Athletic.
The club had been sending out the same message privately for a couple of weeks before the deadline, but it fell on deaf ears.
The 27-year-old Danish has found himself out of favour under Valerien Ismael despite starting pre-season in the Frenchman’s first-team set-up, failing to make recent Championship matchday squads.
However, Zohore could still find himself pressed into action as West Brom have the on-loan Jordan Hugill as the only other traditional No 9 in the squad
Chance?
Ismael had reservations over the striker’s ability to adapt to his intense style when he first arrived, but admitted mid-way through August that he had “raised his intensity and has the quality and is part of the process” [Express and Star] .
However, the Baggies forward has struggled to get a look in recent league games and will need to do more in training to convince the boss that he deserves a another chance.
As it stands, Callum Robinson, Karlan Grant, Grady Diangana, Matt Phillips and Hugill are all ahead of him in the pecking order given that the wingers can also lead the line, and Zohore has a lot of work to do if he wants to see first-team action this term.
He has not looked convincing since joining West Brom from Cardiff City in 2019, spending last term on loan at Millwall.
Zohore is clearly not Premier League material and is not likely to be part of the squad next summer should they return to the top-flight.
He could be gone as early as next January, but he has the chance to prove himself in the coming weeks and months, and him doing that cannot be ruled out.
