West Brom defender Dara O'Shea criticised after Cristiano Ronaldo incident
West Brom defender Dara O’Shea has come under fire from a Sky Sports pundit after an incident involving Cristiano Ronaldo on Wednesday night.
Ex-Liverpool defender Phil Babb expressed his displeasure at the 22-year-old’s actions during the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup Qualifier against Portugal in Faro.
New Manchester United signing Ronaldo was caught on camera raising his hands on the Albion man before taking a penalty kick in the first half, with O’Shea holding his head and going to the floor.
Speaking during Sky Sports’ half-time analysis of the incident, in a video relayed on their Twitter account, Babb condemned O’Shea for his apparent theatrics.
“There’s a bit of petulance from both parties involved,” Babb said.
“You see Dara kick the ball away, this hand-raising little slap, he [Ronaldo] shouldn’t do it but then Dara grabs his face to try and get him sent off you should imagine.
“I don’t like to see that, he’s clutching there, trying to get Ronaldo off.”
The game is the game
It’s hard to defend O’Shea’s theatrics – he certainly made the most of the contact from Ronaldo.
However, one can only imagine the consequences or reaction had roles been reversed.
Would O’Shea have escaped without punishment for striking Ronaldo?
The Portuguese forward went on to break the Republic of Ireland’s hearts last night as he struck twice in the closing stages to sink the away side 2-1.
O’Shea, meanwhile, endured contrasting fortunes to the 36-year-old.
The Albion ace was booked 18 minutes after Ronaldo missed his penalty before being substituted in the 35th minute after suffering an awkward injury that could see him sidelined for the coming weeks, and possibly months.
West Brom fans will be crossing their fingers for the swift return of one of their most consistent performers so far this season.
