Carlton Palmer is sure West Brom will put release clause in Sam Johnstone deal
West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will be signing a new deal that includes a release clause, according to Carlton Palmer.
The 28-year-old England international was linked with a summer exit, but none of his suitors met the Baggies’ demands.
Johnstone remains at The Hawthorns and was in goal for England against Andorra during the World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.
He will now be looking to help Valerien Ismael’s side secure an instant return to the Premier League, and Palmer wants a new deal sorted out as soon as possible.
The former West Brom midfielder told This is Futbol: “Sam has to play because he’s part of the England set-up. If he’s not going to play, he will lose his England place
“I don’t think West Brom would have stood in his way if a club had met his valuation but that didn’t happen. Signing a new contract makes sense for both parties and I’m sure a release clause will be put in there.
“They just need to get that done, put it to bed and get him signed.”
With just a few months left on his deal, the Baggies are protecting their asset by extending his deal, and they should be getting that out of the way quickly with the transfer window now over.
Including a release clause in the contract means Johnstone can be allowed to leave next summer for a particular fee should in case Ismael’s side fail to secure promotion.
The England international has opted to remain in the Championship with them, and it appears that would not affect his World Cup chances in the summer having been called up for the ongoing qualifiers.
He remains a quality goalie and having him in the squad helps increase their promotion chances.
Johnstone could be celebrating a return to the top-flight and a place in the Three Lions World Cup squad next summer if things go his way, and that would be befitting given the sacrifice he made in the summer.
West Brom have started the campaign on the most impressive of notes, and they now need to keep up the momentum for the remainder of the campaign.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies ace has picked up a nasty injury on international duty.
