Jamie Mackie hails Alex Mowatt in West Brom clash v Derby

West Brom welcomed Derby County to The Hawthorns on Tuesday evening looking to return to winning ways.

Valerien Ismael made two changes to his side, bringing in Adam Reach and Callum Robinson as he looked for answers.

One player that looks to be irreplaceable at this moment is Alex Mowatt in the heart of this Baggies side.

Jamie Mackie was watching the game live for Sky Sports, and singled out Mowatt after a “clever” corner routine almost brought the opener.

“Fantastic chance for Ajayi,” he said. “He’s come up for a corner, one off the training ground.

“Played it short, Mowatt has got it and played a little one across the six-yard box and Ajayi comes in and should score.

“They’ve worked one really well off the training ground, Mowatt is a clever player.”

Specialist.

There is a reason that Ismael immediately went to sign Mowatt this summer.

After leaving Barnsley, he knew that his skipper at Oakwell last season was available and he is perfect for this system, something that he is proving every single week.

Set pieces are somewhat of a speciality for Mowatt, with his technique sensational – we all remember that volley at Blackburn.

This was a well-worked corner, and the pass was perfect although somewhat, unfortunately, it fell to Ajayi rather than someone such as Robinson or it could have been another assist.

Jake Livermore has also come alive alongside Mowatt, and after many years of that being a weak spot, our midfield has become one of the best midfield in the Championship.

In other West Brom news, this is how the Baggies lined up this evening – did Ismael get it right?
