Journalist stunned by Matt Phillips moment in first half of West Brom v Preston

Luke Hatfield was stunned by a Matt Phillips miss in the first of Saturday’s clash between West Brom and Preston North End.

Phillips, 30, was named in the starting XI for the visit to Deepdale after being used as a second-half substitute in the disappointing midweek draw against Derby County.

He and Jordan Hugill were the two changes made by Valerien Ismael for the trip to Lancashire, but he failed to make the most of an opportunity in the first half as Albion went a goal behind, before he later struck an equaliser.

Express & Star journalist Hatfield, reporting live at the game, was left stunned after a miss from the former Scotland international.

Via his personal Twitter profile, he wrote: “Oh wow. Phillips with a massive chance and he volleys just wide. Lovely ball from [Adam] Reach to find him. Best move of the match.”

Bad beginnings

West Brom came into today’s clash hoping to right the wrongs of their last two games.

Despite still being unbeaten in the Championship, two draws have seen their early momentum stumble, with unrest emanating from sections of The Hawthorns after some poor moments in the draws against Millwall and Derby.

But they were up against an in-form Preston on Saturday, a team who were unbeaten in their last five games, and the home side took the lead in the 26th minute through Benjamin Whiteman.

However, Phillips made amends for his previous miss as he equalised on the stroke of half-time to level the scores at 1-1 heading into the interval.
