Tottenham have watched Sam Johnstone all season
Tottenham Hotspur are ready to table a bid for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as they eye Hugo Lloris’ replacement, according to The Mirror.
The Frenchman’s deal expires next summer, and Spurs want a long-term replacement, with the Baggies ace very much on their radar.
They have watched the 28-year-old England international in all of his Championship games this term, but he is likely to cost them more than £20million.
Billionaire-owned Tottenham [Forbes] have been impressed by Johnstone during their scouting mission, and they could make a move for him pretty soon.
The Englishman is also in the final months of his contract, and West Brom will be keen to see him sign an extension so as not to lose him for free at the end of the season.
While Spurs are an attractive side, Johnstone could opt to remain at The Hawthorns if Valerien Ismael guides the team to immediate promotion.
They have lost just once in 11 Championship games, and are one of the early favourites for automatic promotion.
Suitors were not keen to meet West Brom’s asking price for the goalie in the summer, and it is hard to see anyone willing to part with £20million for him anytime soon.
Spurs are not likely to be looking to move in January when they know they can get their man for free in the summer.
West Brom are also not likely to be open to cashing in on him mid-way through a promotion-chasing campaign.
Nevertheless, a lot can happen between now and the winter transfer window, but fans will be hoping the Three Lions man can remain at the club for as long as possible.
