Kevin Phillips suggests West Brom should have signed Troy Deeney in summer
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips suggests West Brom should have made an exception to sign Troy Deeney in the summer before he joined Birmingham.
Blues signed Deeney, 33, after he was released by Watford but the Brum-born striker is someone who’s been regularly linked with the Baggies in recent years.
Speaking to The Athletic last week, Deeney revealed how he came close to joining the Black Country club on two occasions, most recently after Slaven Bilic led them to promotion to the Premier League.
When asked if Albion missed a trick by not signing Deeney this year after he left Watford, Phillips told West Brom News: “Probably.
“Troy’s not getting any younger and his game is based on hold-up play. He does work hard but does he reach those levels that Ismael is looking at? He wouldn’t.
“That might be one of the reasons why they didn’t go in for him. Albion’s style of play and their high press, that isn’t Troy. He gives you something else, that leadership and he can get onto balls into the box.
“I can see why he didn’t go there but again, for me, sometimes you have to make exceptions and at that level, he’s a good player who can guarantee goals.”
Throughout his career, Deeney has scored 85 times in the Championship, making 230 appearances in England’s second-tier.
Since joining Blues, Deeney hasn’t lived up to his goalscoring hype, netting just once in six league appearances.
West Brom have found it surprisingly tough to get among the goals at times this season, despite creating an abundance of chances.
There’s no denying Deeney would get goals at The Hawthorns had Valerien Ismael signed him in the summer but based on his form at St Andrew’s, Albion may have taken the correct approach by putting their faith in Karlan Grant and signing Jordan Hugill.
In other West Brom news, one Baggies player has blown a journalist away with a recent international display.
