Adrian Durham slams West Brom in talkSPORT rant, compares 'garbage' Ismael to Pulis

Adrian Durham has taken aim at West Brom in a passionate Monday rant on talkSPORT, comparing Valerien Ismael to Tony Pulis.

West Brom beat Birmingham City 1-0 at The Hawthorns on Friday night, a result that sees the Baggies sit second in the Championship after 12 games.

However, the manner of their victory drew fury from Durham, who took the opportunity to express his disdain for the style of play implemented by Ismael since joining from Barnsley during the summer.

“What a truly, truly awful game of football,” Durham said on talkSPORT’s ‘Drive’ show [18/10/21].

“West Bromwich Albion are in one of the top two spots but this Valerien Ismael fella, he’s Tony Pulis with towels. It’s just garbage, isn’t it?

“West Brom have recent history in the Premier League. If he gets to the Premier League playing like this then they’ll be laughed out of it in no time at all. They’ll be even worse than Norwich!

“I believe that the fanbase at West Brom is split because there was so much noise at the time about wanting Pulis out and wanting a better style of football, that a lot of them realise that, actually, this guy is Tony Pulis with towels.

“He’s also got a lot of people backing him, but he’s pulling the wool over a lot of people’s eyes. There is no football plan whatsoever with Valerien Ismael, he might be a lovely guy and he might take them up, but this is not the new second coming, this is not the Championship version of Pep.”

It was an astonishing rant by Durham on a manager who has overseen just one defeat in 12 league games as Albion boss.

Bournemouth are the only side who sit above them in the Championship table with the Baggies two points ahead of big-spenders Fulham.

There have been a few moans and groans from supporters over the brand of football on show under Ismael, but it’s still only October and the French-German boss is surely targeting further improvement from his side.

The results are there, and now Ismael must work on the style of play.

But to vent such fury on a manager who has put the club on course for an automatic promotion push is bizarre, to say the least.
