Nigel Quashie slams penalty decision in West Brom 3-0 loss Fulham

Nigel Quashie was scathing of referee Michael Salisbury after he awarded Fulham a penalty in their 3-0 win over West Brom on Saturday afternoon.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a hat-trick at Craven Cottage as the home side secured a comfortable victory against one of their supposed rivals in the race for the Championship automatic promotion spots.

However, Quashie, who played for West Brom between 2006-07, was furious at the manner of the first goal as the Serbian centre-forward won a penalty from a Kyle Bartley challenge before dusting himself down to convert it in the 20th-minute.

Writing via his personal Twitter profile after the controversial incident, Quashie said: “I’ve just witnessed an absolute disgrace of a penalty decision against West Brom.

“I understand the pressure refs are under but things like this don’t help the game.

“Michael Salisbury you’ve had a complete shocker!”

VAR anyone?

Mitrovic is well-known for his theatrics in and around the penalty area, and that is why referees have to be at the top of their game to spot his bouts of simulation.

Unfortunately, on this occasion, Salisbury’s standards slipped as he gave in to Mitrovic’s demands.

After a relatively decent opening to the game for West Brom, this broke the deadlock, and essentially, their chances of achieving a positive result.

That shouldn’t be the way, but it always looked like a long way back for Valerien Ismael’s side after Fulham went ahead on Saturday.

Albion will be disappointed in the manner in which they crumbled at Craven Cottage, but it all began with the decision of Salisbury after Mitrovic went down under the challenge of Bartley.

This was one of those rare occasions where the use of VAR, as Albion experienced last year in the Premier League, would have been very welcome.
