Andy Hinchcliffe: Matt Clarke was woeful

West Brom defender Matt Clarke was slammed by Andy Hinchcliffe during their 3-0 defeat against Fulham in the Championship on Saturday.

In a game where most Baggies players underperformed, a few of them had standout moments where they appeared to let the side down.

Just after the hour mark, Clarke was responsible for a free kick inside his half and instead of calmly spotting his teammate, he played the ball casually into the stride of Aleksandar Mitrovic who found himself clean through on goal.

Fortunately for Valerien Ismael and Clarke, Fulham did not manage to score from that, but it was something that Hinchcliffe wasn’t happy with on commentary for Sky Sports.

He said, “That was woeful from Clarke. You cannot keep doing that.”

Shocking

This was undoubtedly the worst Baggies performance under Ismael and by quite a distance.

The Frenchman brought a high pressing game to the Hawthorns and his West Brom side appeared to close opponents down with cohesion and a proper system.

However, against Fulham, they seemed to be all over the place with nobody quite knowing their duties.

Clarke, who was already having an ordinary game, capped off his performance with an error that almost led to his side conceding their third goal.

They eventually did go on to concede number three late into the game, but this is not the kind of performance one would expect from promotion hopefuls.

Ismael’s got a serious job on his hands and the next few weeks are key in getting it right.
