West Ham favourites to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone

West Ham have reportedly emerged as favourites to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this summer.

According to West Ham Way, which is a website of ExWHUemployee, a reliable source at the club with over 100k followers on Twitter, Johnstone is set to leave the Hawthorns in the summer.

The Baggies are already understood to be looking for a replacement as they’re prepared to lose his services at the end of the season.

The only chance West Brom hold on to Johnstone is promotion, and even that may not be enough.

With West Ham desperate to sign him, they can offer him higher wages and European football, if they qualify for it next season.

This year they’ve already entered the last 16 of the Europa League and have one of the best midfielders in the world in Declan Rice among their ranks.

Keeping Johnstone would be pivotal for Valerien Ismael or whoever the next Baggies boss is, to build a foundation for the future.

The England international is undoubtedly admired by fans, but has also impressed club legend Kevin Phillips.

Speaking to West Brom News in April this year, Phillips said, “I wouldn’t say [his price-tag] is going up dramatically but you kind of think every performance he puts in like that, it’s going up a million probably every game.

“He’s been outstanding.”

Losing him would be a massive blow but sometimes that’s the price you pay of not being one of the rich and successful clubs in the land.
