Joseph Masi claims West Brom are 'very keen' to sign a striker in the January transfer window
West Brom are preparing to sign a new striker in the January transfer window, according to Joseph Masi.
Albion have lacked cutting edge upfront this season, with the 2-1 win over Coventry City on Saturday (4 December) the first time they have scored more than once in a game in seven matches.
Karlan Grant, who netted the opening goal against the Sky Blues, is the team’s top scorer but he tends to play out on the left.
Speaking on the Express & Star’s Baggies Broadcast podcast, Masi confirmed that West Brom are lining up a deal for a new frontman in the new year.
“I can say for certain that Albion are very, very keen on signing a striker next month,” he said.
“There does seem to be a confidence. You certainly get the impression that Albion have already done a lot of the groundwork that they’ve needed to do and that they’ve got a clear strategy.”
This is exactly the news that Albion fans want to hear, as the club’s promotion bid is likely to rest on whether a striker can come in in January and make an impact.
With Fulham and Bournemouth owning the Championship’s two most prolific marksmen in Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dominic Solanke respectively, West Brom need a player to rival that high-scoring pair.
It was hoped that Jordan Hugill might fit the bill when he signed on loan from Norwich City in the summer, but he has scored just once this season.
The rumour mill has already begun on who Albion’s new frontman could be and they have been linked with Daryl Dike [Express & Star], Keinan Davis [The Athletic] and Dwight Gayle [The Telegraph] among other names.
If the club already have a target lined up as Masi suggests, hopefully a deal can be agreed early in the window and the new addition can hit the ground running.
In other West Brom news, Chris Lepkowski has compared one Albion youngster to Ali Dia.
